Abstract: 

Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are major causes of enteric diseases, urinary tract infections (UTI). This is carried by 20-30% of human population responsible for health associated infections. The paper aims to verify the ethno botanical use of the plant Cyperuskyllingia to validate its alleged antimicrobial property as well as to determine the secondary plant metabolites behind its activity. The result showed that both plant secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and phlobatanin were found in all solvent-extracts while both reducing sugar andsaponins are absent in all leaf extracts. On the other hand, leaf extracts of C. kyllingiashowed slightly more pronounced activity against Staphylococcus aureus than Escherichia coli but not to a point where the difference between its activities is statistically significant. Propanol extracts at concentration of 100 mg/mL (20 mm) showed higher activity than extracts at the same concentration on other solvent-extracts. Ethanol extract and distilled water extracts showed better activity against Escherichia coli with a very active inhibition of 20 mm which is closer to the zone inhibited by standard antibiotic Amikacin with a constant 30 mm inhibition against both bacteria. In reference with the standard of zones and inhibition and corresponding inferences by Guevara et al all three plant extracts and on two concentration (75 mg/mL and 100 mg/mL) have active to very active antimicrobial activity against two pathogens.
