Business To Rehabilitation Of Persons With Disabilities: A Journey Through Corporate Social Responsibility

Disability rehabilitation in India has a long past but a short scientific history which started only after International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP) in 1981. The Government of India is committed to provide rehabilitation services to all persons with disabilities. However, accessibility of rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities is too limited due to existing infrastructure, budget allotments, plan and policies etc. Corporate social responsibility is a business philosophy that stresses the importance of keeping the best interests of the wider society in mind. Although turning a profit every year and taking the business to new heights is likely to be main goal, it is important to consider the societal impact companies are having as well. The present study is aimed to study the significance of disability rehabilitation in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies of Indian public enterprises and to find out the top management commitment, corporate policies and practices, social inclusion and corporate investment in disabled entrepreneurship. Six Indian public enterprises were selected as purposive sampling to study by focusing related 16 domains. The results of the studies show that only 33% top management is formally committed to rehabilitation for persons with disabilities and only 17% corporate reports are talking about social inclusion and accessibility. The finding reflects that 66.7% PSUs have taken measures to make the organizations disable friendly only 50% reports highlights the steps taken by the organization to encourage the social inclusion and economic development of people with disabilities.
